“Richard, stop!” Ashley suddenly spoke up, her voice trembling. “Just stop it. Let’s go.”
“No, Ashley, we are not leaving!” Richard shouted, completely losing his temper. The surrounding crowd of graduates and families had gone quiet, turning to watch the unfolding drama. “Emily is my daughter. And she is going to listen to me.”
He turned back to me, his eyes wild with a terrifying mixture of greed and desperation. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a folded, legal-looking document, slamming it against his palm.
“You think you’re so smart, Dr. Rivera?” Richard hissed, a sickening, triumphant smile suddenly creeping onto his face. “You think you executed us today? You think that little adoption paper means you’re completely free of us? You should have checked the fine print of the original medical custody relinquishment papers we signed at Mercy General fifteen years ago.”
My blood ran cold. The triumphant air in my chest suddenly vanished, replaced by a sudden, sickening dread.
Megan froze beside me, her eyes darting to the paper in Richard’s hand.
“What are you talking about?” I whispered, my voice losing its steady edge.
Richard stepped closer, the smell of his expensive cologne suffocating me. He tapped the document in his hand. “When we signed those papers, we didn’t fully surrender parental rights. It was a temporary medical conservatorship designed to transfer financial liability to the state or a guardian for the duration of your cancer treatment. Because the state never formally finalized a permanent severance, and because you were technically a dependent under a conditional clause… legally speaking, Emily, your assets, your medical license registrations, and any future financial contracts you sign are tied to a family trust that I control.”
He leaned in, his whisper venomous and sharp.
“You might have a different name on your diploma, but according to New York State estate and trust law, your career belongs to us. You’re going to pay back every single dime we lost, and you’re going to fund this family for the rest of your life. And if you refuse…”
Richard smiled, a brutal, merciless expression that made him look like a monster.
“…I will file an injunction tomorrow morning that will suspend your medical license before you even step foot into your residency. Your career will be dead before it even starts.”
He shoved the paper into my hands.
“See you in court, daughter.”
He turned on his heel, gesturing for Karen and Ashley to follow him. They began to walk away, pushing through the stunned crowd, leaving me standing there as the world crashed down around me.
I looked down at the paper in my hands, my fingers shaking, the words “Conditional Transfer of Directorial Trust and Liability” blurring before my eyes.
I looked at Megan, whose face had gone completely pale. “Megan…” I choked out. “Is this… is this real?”
