Forty-three families rejected her, but this lonely old soldier saw in her his own daughter

The doctors don’t understand it. They’re calling it a « medical miracle ».

I know it’s not a miracle. It’s Manon. You can’t die when someone needs you so much.

She is 16 years old now.

Last week, she took to the stage for the adoption association’s gala.

There were 300 people.

She took the microphone. She was trembling a little, but she looked for my gaze in the front row. I gave her a thumbs up.

« Hello. My name is Manon. »

His voice was clear, despite his difficult speech.

« When I was a baby, 43 families said NO. They saw my face. They saw my illness. They were scared. »

The room was silent. You could have heard a pin drop.

« And then, a gentleman came. He was old. He was alone. He had grease on his hands. »

She pointed at me.

« He said YES. He said: she’s my daughter. »

Tears streamed down my wrinkled cheeks. I didn’t even try to hide them.

« Today, my dad is sick. He has a tumor. But he’s here. He’s fighting. He taught me that you never abandon the people you love. »

She raised her fist, as I often did.

« Don’t look at what we lack. Look at what we have extra. We have an extra chromosome, but we also have an extra heart! »

The entire room rose to its feet. A standing ovation. People were openly crying.

After the speech, twelve couples went to the stand to inquire about adopting “different” children.

Twelve.

My daughter changed the world, a little bit, that night.

Last night, we watched the sun set from the garage balcony.

I know the end is near. I can feel it in my bones. Thomas and Claire are ready. Manon is ready, even if she refuses to admit it.

She took my hand.

» Dad ?  »

« Yes, my dear? »

« Was I a mistake? My first parents… they said mistake. »

I squeezed his hand as hard as I could.

« No. Never. You weren’t a mistake. You were just… waiting. »

« Waiting for what? »

« From me. And I was waiting for you to arrive. We were both waiting for each other. »

She smiled. That smile that saved my life 14 years ago.

» Dad ?  »

» Yes ?  »

« It was the best 44th try in the world. »

She’s right.

I didn’t have the life I imagined. I didn’t have any biological children. I ended my days alone, sick, and penniless.

But I am the richest man in the world.

Because one rainy day, when everyone else saw a problem, I saw my daughter.

And it was worth every second of the fight.
