Vivian took a step forward defensively.
“You don’t understand how expensive life is. Mark needed to maintain a certain image at work. If people saw him struggling…”
“Pause?” roared the grandfather. “You spent over eight million dollars ! Eight. Million. Dollars.”
Mark finally blurted out:
“FINE! Okay! I used it! I used it because I deserved it! Claire was never going to understand what true success is, she always…”
—Enough —said the grandfather.
Her voice dropped to a chillingly calm tone.
You’ll pack your things. Today. Claire and the baby are coming home with me. And you—she pointed at Mark—you’ll pay back every dollar you stole. I already have lawyers available.
Vivian’s face paled.
“Edward, please…”
“No,” she said firmly. “You almost ruined her life.”
Tears streamed down my face; they weren’t tears of sadness, but a storm of anger, betrayal, and relief.
Mark looked at me; panic replaced arrogance.
—Claire… please. You wouldn’t take our daughter away from me… would you?
His words shocked me.
I hadn’t even thought about that.
But in that moment, with my newborn baby sleeping peacefully in my arms and the shattered pieces of trust scattered around me, I knew I had to make a decision. One that would change our lives forever.
I took a deep, shaky breath before answering.
Mark reached out his hand, but I stepped back, holding my daughter tighter.
“You took everything from me,” I said softly. “My stability, my confidence… my chance to prepare for his arrival. And you did it while making me feel ashamed for needing help.”
Mark’s face twitched.
“I made a mistake…”
“You did hundreds ,” I said. “Every month.”
Grandpa put a firm hand on my shoulder.
“You don’t have to decide anything today,” she murmured. “But you deserve security. And honesty.”
Suddenly, Vivian burst into tears.
“Claire, please! You’re going to ruin Mark’s career. Everyone will find out!”
The grandfather did not hesitate.
“If anyone deserves consequences, it’s him. Not Claire.”
Mark’s voice turned into a desperate whisper.
